Sepsis
Sepsis: a global and national health priority
Sepsis is the most common cause of death worldwide due to infections. Around 50 million cases of sepsis occur every year and around 11 million people die as a result.
In Switzerland, around 20,000 people contract sepsis every year and around 3,500 die from it. Sepsis can affect anyone, but premature and newborn babies, young children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Sepsis has been declared a global health priority by the World Health Organization (WHO) and many countries have developed national strategies to combat sepsis in response to the 2017 WHO resolution. Switzerland recently launched the National Sepsis Action Plan to improve awareness, prevention and treatment of this life-threatening disease in Switzerland.
